Review of Annie at the Theatre Royal Plymouth

Everyone will love this show!

It’s a show that’s captivated theatres and cinemas for years, and for the next few days, Annie the Musical is in the Theatre Royal in Plymouth bringing joy to the Southwest- before continuing its tour around the United Kingdom.

Set in 1930s New York during The Great Depression, brave young Annie is forced to live a life of misery and torment at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage.

Determined to find her real parents, her luck changes when she is chosen to spend Christmas at the residence of famous billionaire, Oliver Warbucks- who is played by Alex Bourne, to spend and his selfless secretary Grace, played by Amelia Adams.

The billionaire is beyond charmed with Annie and then tries to help Annie find her real parents, who she believes are still alive. Miss Hannigan, however, has other ideas.

This Musical, without a doubt, exceeded my expectations! The entire cast was just exemplary- with standouts being Strictly Judge, Craig Revel Horwood who played Miss Hannigan and the outstanding Zoe Akinyosade as Annie.

The energy was high from the get-go with all the vastly talented orphans singing their hearts and enthralling each opportunity they had on stage. They sang all the Annie classics like ‘Tomorrow’ and ‘hard knock life’ and it was just incredible- to the point where members of the audience were cheering and clapping after each song. And the entire audience loved Sandy the dog running around, who was very well-behaved, as well.

Another memorable character was Paul French who played the role of Miss Hannigan’s sly brother, Rooster whose snorting and animal noises brought laughter around the Theatre Royal.

All in all, Annie the Musical is a must-see show and is perfect for every member of the family. There were no faults and, everything seemed to have run smoothly- from the production, costumes, and remarkable performance- the huge standing ovation at the end was well deserved.
