A service takes place at Exeter Cathedral today at 4pm to mark the start of the World War One centenary commemorations.
It'll be attended by many local residents whose relatives fought and died in the conflict, or who have other links to the events.
The Dean of the Cathedral, Jonathan Draper, says the congregation will be reflecting on how the beginning of the war transformed and destroyed lives.
