New church gargoyle honours Devon's female bishop

A new gargoyle marking the appointment of Devon's first woman bishop is being unveiled on a local church today.

Gargoyles are traditionally grotesque or distorted figures - but the Bishop of Crediton Sarah Mullaly needn't worry that she's been caricatured in stone on the Church of St Mary in Aylesbeare.
The gargoyle is just a simple stone in the shape of a bishop's mitre, with symbols on it to indicate her previous career as a nurse.
Its design and creation was paid for by an anonymous donor from Aylesbeare, and will be unveiled by Bishop Sarah herself in a ceremony this lunchtime
