It's understood that St. Margaret's school in Exeter is to close in September.
Parents of children at the private school, owned by the Woodard Corporation, were told by letter yesterday after rumours started circulating earlier this week.
The girls' school on Magdalen Road is thought to be suffering from low pupil numbers - the sixth form was threatened with closure last year, and the former headteacher left in April.
200 children face the prospect of starting at a new school later this year. By contrast, nearby Exeter School has around 670 pupils and over 400 attend the Maynard.
