On day prime minister battles for survival
Just when the prime minister needed the support of his closest colleagues in Westminster, the chancellor of the exchequer decided his time would be better spent in Devon.
As Boris Johnson faced his most troubled day in the House of Commons, Rishi Sunak travelled 200 miles to Ilfracombe to the Pall Corporation, which purifies drugs including a majority of UK covid vaccines.
Mr Sunak shared a picture of himself on Twitter with North Devon MP Selaine Saxby, with the caption: "Excited to be in Ilfracombe this morning with Selaine Saxby. I'm visiting Pall Corporation.
"They’re announcing £60 million of investment at this site creating 200 new local jobs #PlanForJobs."
The chancellor is widely tipped to be a leading candidate to lead the Conservative party in the event they ditch Mr Johnson who had confessed to attending a party in his back garden to which 100 people were invited at the height of the first lockdown.
