Devon and Cornwall Police are starting a six-month trial of drone cameras this week - with one of them based in Exeter.
They will be used during searches for missing people in difficult terrain such as cliffs, and in the response to major incidents.
Inspector Andy Hamilton is heading up the trial and he says at a time when resources are tight, the drones will be a cost-effective asset.
