Gardeners in Marldon in the South Hams will soon be able to save themselves a trip to the tip, thanks to a home-grown recycling scheme.
Devon County Council’s development management committee gave the go-ahead this week for a new community composting scheme next door to the village’s Church House Inn.
When it opens, gardeners will be able to hand in their green waste and grass clippings to be shovelled into community compost bays.
Once nature has taken its course and the waste turns into rich local compost, they can collect it by the bag to put on their gardens.
Members of the committee unanimously backed the scheme, which will open twice a week. The nearest alternative recycling centre is at the tip in Paignton.
The only objection was from Marldon Parish Council which said the unloading of vehicles may cause blockages or delays, and neighbours may be affected by smells and noise.
