The M5 is open again this morning after being closed in both directions near Exeter last night following a very serious incident involving three cars and a lorry.
The crash came shortly after another collision yesterday afternoon in which a casualty was taken to hospital in a critical condition by air ambulance.
The closure of the motorway between junctions 28 and 29 brought traffic to a standstill during yesterday's rush hour in the Sowton, Pinhoe, Heavitree and Sandygate areas in Exeter ... other local roads in Exeter, Honiton, Cullompton and Tiverton were also badly affected as motorists tried to find alternative routes.
The southbound carriageway reopened last night, and the northbound cordon was finally lifted in the early hours of this morning.
