Planning applications for two high-profile developments go before Exeter councillors this evening.
The much-publicised new Ikea store, and the new police buildings and supermarket at Middlemoor, are expected to create a total of around 650 jobs.
Ikea is seeking outline permission for a new store near the rugby ground, along with up to 220 new homes off Newcourt Way.
Business leaders have welcomed the Swedish retailer's impending arrival in Exeter, anticipating large numbers of shoppers from outside the city - and the proposals are being recommended for approval.
Councillors are also being advised to give permission to the new police 'hub' built on the Middlemoor site, with a custody centre to replace the existing cells at Heavitree Road.
The police say these are urgently needed, in view of the growth of the city and the new community of Cranbrook nearby.
There'll also be a Morrisons supermarket and car park on part of the land, which has been sold off to fund the other developments - and up to 83 homes.
