1743 engraving turns up in attic
A map of Exeter that illustrates individual houses in "an amateur historical way" by a Mr William Birkinshaw in 1743 has been acquired by Exeter University historian Dr Todd Gray.
"Exeter was one of the first cities to be mapped professionally," he explains. Now this amateur map, which has survived for nearly 300 years, is to go on display at St. Nicholas Priory.
