Campaigners wanting to save the mural at the bottom of Exeter's Fore Street have lost their battle.
The building it was painted in 1979 needs repair and the owners couldn't afford to restore the mural as well.
A crowd-funding initiative was launched and Exeter City Council was asked to step in - however the mural has now been painted over.
Henrietta Billings, from the conservation group the Twentieth Century Society, says she's sorry the authority didn't get involved.
