It happened on Saturday night (30th June) at around 11pm outside Tesco Metro on the High Street.
A 40-year-old man sustained potentially life-threatening injuries as a result of the assault and was taken to the RD&E Hospital and later transferred to Derriford in Plymouth.
A 30-year-old man from Exeter has been arrested on suspicion of GBH and is currently in police custody.
