Changes could save hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Devon's fire service is making changes to the way it responds to automatic fire alarms, after it was revealed that firefighters were called out nearly 60,000 in the last five years.
The service says, of the automatic fire alarm callouts they respond to, less than 2 per cent are classed as emergencies.
Following a consultation earlier this year, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service will now only respond if there are signs of a fire, with exceptions for care homes, sheltered accommodation and homes of multiple occupation.
It's hoped the changes, which come into force today (4th November), will save nearly £180,000 a year.
