Officers are looking for witnesses to a crash on the A379 Teignmouth Road, Watcombe last night (Tuesday 30th July).
They were called just after 9 o clock, but found the silver Ford Fiesta empty after it hit a tree.
A man in his 30s was found nearby with critical chest injuries. He was taken to Torbay Hospital but later transferred to Derriford in Plymouth where he remains in a critical condition.
The road was closed for 5 hours for a full investigation and officers are working to establish the cause of this collision.
Any witnesses who were in the area at the time of the collision to telephone 101 quoting Log 893 of 30th July 2019.
