Figures released this morning show that three Exeter prison inmates committed suicide last year.
Nationally the number of prisoners taking their own lives is at its highest level for seven years.
The Howard League for Penal Reform, which has published the figures, says several factors are coming together to put them at risk of self-harm.
Exeter prison is overcrowded - with 200 more inmates than it's designed for - and that combines with other problems including cuts to staffing numbers and other resources.
