Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau has seen a 37 per cent increase in people needing advice on debt in the three months to September, compared to the same period last year.
The problems include rent and council tax arrears, unpaid bills, and difficuties with unsecured and payday loans.
There's also been a 26 per cent rise in enquiries relating to housing problems - including actual homelessness.
However there's been a reduction in welfare benefit enquiries compared to last year.
