Romance scams on the rise
Ahead of Valentine’s Day, authorities are warning of a sharp rise in romance scams targeting people across Devon.
Criminals are increasingly using emotional manipulation and AI-powered deepfakes to trick victims into handing over cash.
Experts say the golden rule is simple: never transfer money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency to someone you haven’t met in person.
The "Red Flags" to watch for include:
Pressure to move from dating sites to encrypted apps like WhatsApp or Telegram.
Secrecy: They insist on keeping the relationship private.
The "Crisis" Excuse: Constant reasons for not meeting, such as "working on an oil rig" or a "sudden medical emergency."
How to protect yourself:
Use Google Images to check if their profile photo has been stolen from someone else.
The "Live" Test: If they claim to be on a video call, ask them to do something specific, like touch their nose with a ring finger - deepfake AI often struggles to replicate complex movements in real-time.
If you or someone you know has been targeted, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or visit their website.
